Most chimney repair comes down to one thing: water. It gets in through a cracked crown, open mortar joints or failed flashing, then freezes, expands and breaks the masonry apart. Home Crew Construction repairs chimneys across Long Island, in Nassau County and Suffolk County. We fix the cause, not just the stain on your ceiling.

Quick answer: What does chimney repair involve?

Chimney repair covers fixing leaks, cracked crowns, worn mortar joints, spalling brick, damaged caps, failed flashing and cracked flue liners. Home Crew Construction inspects the whole chimney first, finds where the water or damage starts, and gives Long Island homeowners in Nassau and Suffolk County a clear written quote before any work begins.

Signs your chimney needs repair

  • Water stains on a ceiling or wall near the chimney.
  • Spalling brick: faces that flake, crack or pop off.
  • Mortar between the bricks that is crumbling, sandy or missing.
  • A cracked crown, or a cap that is rusted, loose or missing.
  • Rust on the damper or inside the firebox.
  • White, powdery staining on the outside brick.
  • Loose bricks near the top, or a chimney that leans.

Common chimney repairs on Long Island

  • Crown repair or replacement. The slab at the top of the chimney sheds water. Once it cracks, water runs straight into the chimney. See chimney crowns.
  • Repointing. Grinding out worn mortar and packing the joints with new mortar that matches. See chimney repointing.
  • Brick replacement. Cutting out spalled or cracked bricks and setting new ones.
  • Flashing repair. Re-sealing the joint where the chimney meets the roof, the most common source of chimney leaks. See chimney flashing.
  • Caps and chase covers. Replacing rusted or missing covers that let in rain and animals.
  • Flue and liner repair. Fixing cracked flue tiles or installing a new liner so the chimney vents safely.
  • Waterproofing. A breathable water repellent on sound brick, once the other repairs are done.

Why early chimney repair costs less

Chimney damage speeds up once it starts. A hairline crack in the crown lets in a little water. That water freezes, the crack widens, and a season or two later the bricks below start to spall. A small repair in the fall can turn into a partial chimney rebuild a few winters later.

Some damage is a safety issue, not just a leak. A cracked flue liner or open mortar joints inside the chimney can let heat and gases reach the wood framing around it. If you use your fireplace, don’t put those repairs off.

Should you repair or rebuild your chimney?

Most chimneys we look at can be repaired. If the damage is limited to the crown, some mortar joints or a handful of bricks, a repair is the right call and we will say so. A rebuild starts to make sense when bricks are loose across the top, spalling covers large areas, or the chimney leans. Patching a chimney like that every year costs more in the long run than rebuilding the damaged section once. Either way, you get our honest recommendation and a written quote, and the choice is yours.

Is the leak coming from the chimney or the roof?

Water that shows up near a chimney isn’t always coming from the chimney. It can be the flashing, the shingles above it or the masonry itself. Because we do chimney and roof work, we check all three and fix the one that is actually leaking. If it turns out to be the roof, see roof leak repair.

Chimney repair FAQ

Common questions.

Still not sure?

Call 631-965-0881 any time. We'll tell you straight whether it's a repair or a replacement.

01

Can my chimney be repaired, or does it need to be rebuilt?

Most chimneys can be repaired. If the damage is limited to the crown, some mortar joints or a few bricks, repair is the right call. If bricks are loose throughout the top, the chimney leans, or the masonry is crumbling over a wide area, a partial or full rebuild is usually the better investment. We tell you which after an inspection.

02

Why is my chimney leaking?

The usual causes are failed flashing where the chimney meets the roof, a cracked crown, a missing or damaged cap, and porous brick or open mortar joints. We trace the leak to its source before we quote.

03

Can chimney repairs be done in winter?

Some can. Flashing, caps and chase covers can be done most of the year. Mortar and concrete need temperatures above freezing to cure, so larger masonry repairs are best done from spring through fall. If there is an active leak in winter, we stop the water and finish the masonry when the weather allows.

04

Are chimney repair quotes free?

Yes. Quotes are free and there is no obligation. We reply within 24 hours.
