11 services, one crew. Pick yours for costs, timing and what to expect.

Your chimney has two jobs. It carries smoke and gases out of the house, and it has to keep rain and snow from getting in. On Long Island, wind-driven rain, salt air near the shore and winter freeze-thaw cycles work against both. Home Crew Construction provides chimney services across Nassau County and Suffolk County, from a yearly sweep to a full rebuild, with one family-owned crew doing the work.

Most chimney problems start small: a cracked crown, a rusted cap, a few open mortar joints. Caught early, they are simple repairs. Here is what we do:

  • [Chimney sweeping](/services/chimney-sweep/): cleaning out soot and creosote so the flue draws properly and is safe to use.
  • [Chimney repair](/services/chimney-repair/): fixing leaks, cracks, loose bricks and damaged parts before the damage spreads.
  • Repointing and [masonry](/services/masonry/): replacing worn mortar joints and cracked or spalled brick.
  • [Chimney rebuilding](/services/chimney-rebuilding/): taking failing masonry down to solid brick and building it back up.
  • Crowns, caps and chase covers: the parts at the top of the chimney that shed water and keep animals out.
  • Chimney liners: the inner flue that keeps heat and gases away from the structure of the house.
  • [Chimney flashing](/services/chimney-flashing/) and waterproofing: sealing the joint between chimney and roof, and protecting the brick itself.

Signs your chimney needs attention

Illustration · Brick & mortarMortar joints wear out first. Repointing replaces them before water gets into the brick.
  • Water stains on a ceiling or wall next to the chimney, or dampness in the firebox.
  • Brick faces that are flaking, cracking or popping off. This is called spalling.
  • Mortar joints that are cracked, sandy or worn back from the face of the brick.
  • A cracked or crumbling crown, or a cap that is rusted, loose or missing.
  • Rust on the damper, the firebox or a metal chase cover.
  • White, powdery staining on the brick (efflorescence), a sign that water is moving through it.
  • Smoke that drifts into the room, or a strong smoky smell from the fireplace in humid weather.
  • A chimney that leans or has pulled away from the house.

One sign on its own often means a small repair. Several together usually mean water has been getting in for a while. Either way, the fix is easier before winter than after it.

Which chimney service do you need?

You don’t have to know the right term before you call. As a rough guide, here is where common problems usually lead:

  • Stain on the ceiling or wall beside the chimney: usually the flashing, sometimes the crown or the brick.
  • Water or rust in the firebox: often a missing cap or a cracked crown.
  • Crumbling mortar or flaking brick: repointing and brick replacement, or a rebuild if the damage is widespread.
  • Smoke in the room or a weak draft: a sweep first, then a look at the liner.
  • Rust streaks running down a sided chimney: a rusted chase cover.
  • Animals or nests in the chimney: a new cap, once the animals are out.

We confirm the actual cause on site before we quote, because the spot where water shows up inside is often not where it gets in.

How often should a chimney be inspected?

Once a year. That is the recommendation in the national fire-safety standard for chimneys (NFPA 211), and it fits Long Island, where fireplaces and wood stoves get heavy use from fall through early spring. A yearly check catches creosote build-up, blockages from nests and leaves, and early masonry damage while they are still simple to fix. Even if you never light the fireplace, the chimney still stands in the weather, so it still needs a look.

Why Long Island chimneys wear out

Illustration · FlashingMetal that seals the gap where the chimney meets the roof.

Brick and mortar absorb water. In winter that water freezes, expands and pushes the masonry apart a little more each time. Coastal wind drives rain sideways into mortar joints and behind flashing, and salt air speeds up rust on metal caps and chase covers. Over the years the crown cracks, joints open up and bricks start to spall.

Not every chimney is brick, either. Many homes here have a framed chimney finished in siding, with a metal chase cover on top, and those covers rust out. Most of the chimney repairs we do trace back to water getting in somewhere. That is why we look at the whole chimney, from the crown down to the flashing, not just the spot where the stain shows up.

Chimney and roof work from one crew

A leak near a chimney is often a roof problem, and a roof leak is often a chimney problem. Because we also do roofing, we check the chimney, the flashing and the shingles around it together, and fix whichever one is actually letting water in. You don’t need two contractors pointing at each other.
