A solar attic fan is an exhaust fan mounted on the roof or a gable that runs on its own small solar panel. When the sun is out, the fan pulls hot air out of the attic and draws cooler outside air in through the soffit vents. Home Crew Construction installs solar attic fans on homes across Long Island, in Nassau County and Suffolk County.

On a sunny summer afternoon, an attic with poor airflow can get far hotter than the air outside. That heat soaks into the shingles from below and into the ceilings of the rooms underneath. A solar fan is one of the simplest ways to move it out, as long as it’s sized and placed to suit the rest of the attic.

Quick answer: Is a solar attic fan worth it on Long Island?

A solar attic fan is worth it when an attic runs hot or damp and passive vents can’t keep up. It runs on sunlight, needs no wiring, and exhausts the heat and moisture that wear out shingles. Home Crew Construction installs solar attic fans on Long Island homes as part of a balanced ventilation system.

The solar panel powers the fan directly, so there’s no wiring to run and nothing added to your electric bill. The fan works hardest on sunny days, which is exactly when the attic heats up most. It’s still part of the attic’s ventilation system: it needs enough intake at the soffits to pull air from, or it will draw air up from the house instead.

Benefits of a solar attic fan

Illustration · ShinglesThe weather surface you see. Each course overlaps the one below it to shed water.
  • A cooler attic in summer. Less heat baking the shingles and radiating into upstairs rooms.
  • Less work for your air conditioning. A cooler attic means less heat gets into the house.
  • Less moisture. Moving air helps dry out the attic and lowers the risk of mold and mildew.
  • Longer shingle life. Excess attic heat wears shingles out faster from below.
  • Nothing to wire. No electrician and no running cost.

Is a solar attic fan right for your home?

A solar attic fan is a good fit when:

  • The attic gets very hot and the existing vents aren’t keeping up
  • There’s a roof slope or gable with good sun exposure
  • There’s no practical way to add a continuous ridge vent
  • Upstairs rooms stay warm on summer afternoons

It isn’t always the answer. If the soffits are blocked with insulation, or the roof already has a ridge vent, adding a fan can upset the balance of the system. That’s why we look at the whole attic before recommending one. Sometimes the right fix is simply better intake.

Solar attic fan vs. ridge vent

Illustration · Ridge ventLets warm, damp attic air out at the peak, so the deck and shingles last longer.

Both move hot air out of the attic, in different ways. A ridge vent is passive: it runs the full length of the peak and relies on warm air rising, with no moving parts. A solar attic fan is active: it pulls air out on sunny days, when the attic is hottest, which helps on roofs with a short ridge, hips, or an attic that stays hot even with passive vents. They don’t usually belong on the same section of roof, because the fan can pull air in through the ridge vent instead of the soffits. We’ll recommend one or the other based on your roof’s shape and what the attic needs.

  1. Inspect the atticWe check heat, moisture, insulation and the vents you already have.
  2. Recommend and priceWe tell you whether a fan will help, how many you need and where they should go, with a clear written price.
  3. Install and flashWe cut the opening, set the fan and flash it into the shingles so it’s weathertight, with the panel facing the most sun.
  4. Check the airflow and clean upWe confirm air is moving in at the soffits and out through the fan, then clean up completely.

Adding a fan during roof work

Replacing your roof soon? Adding a solar attic fan during a roof replacement is simple, since the roof is already open and the ventilation is being planned anyway. If you’re not sure what your attic needs, a roof inspection is a good place to start.

Common questions.

Still not sure?

Call 631-965-0881 any time. We'll tell you straight whether it's a repair or a replacement.

01

Does a solar attic fan work on cloudy days?

It slows down or stops when there isn’t enough sun. That’s usually fine, because the attic heats up far less on cloudy days. The fan does most of its work when the sun is strongest.

02

Do I need an electrician for a solar attic fan?

No. The fan runs on its own solar panel, so there’s no wiring to the house and nothing added to your electric bill.

03

Can a solar attic fan be used with a ridge vent?

Often it shouldn’t be. A powered fan can pull air in through the ridge vent instead of the soffits, which short-circuits the airflow. We check your existing vents before recommending one.

04

Will a solar attic fan make my roof leak?

Not when it’s flashed in properly with the shingles. We install the fan so the flashing sheds water the same way the rest of the roof does.
