Roof tarp installation is a temporary fix with one job: keep water out of the house until the roof can be repaired properly. Home Crew Construction tarps damaged roofs across Long Island, in Nassau County and Suffolk County. We’re open 24/7, because storms and leaks don’t keep business hours. Tarping is often the first step of our emergency roof services.

Quick answer: When does a roof need an emergency tarp?

A roof needs a tarp when storm damage, a fallen tree or a bad leak leaves it open to the weather and a permanent repair can’t happen right away. Home Crew Construction tarps damaged roofs across Long Island 24/7, securing the tarp over the damage with battens, then plans the permanent repair.

When a roof needs a tarp

  • Shingles or sections of roof blown off in a storm
  • A tree or large branch has come down on the roof
  • An active leak that can’t be repaired properly right away, at night or in bad weather
  • Damage around a chimney or skylight that is letting water in
  • A roof waiting on a scheduled repair or roof replacement, with rain in the forecast

Why a roof tarp has to be installed properly

A tarp thrown over the damage and weighed down with a few bricks usually blows off in the next gust, or channels water straight into the hole it was meant to cover. A tarp that does its job:

  • Is heavy-duty and big enough to extend well past the damaged area on every side
  • Runs up and over the ridge where possible, so water can’t get in behind the top edge
  • Is secured with wood battens fastened through the tarp, not just weighed down
  • Is pulled tight so wind can’t get underneath and lift it
  • Lets water run off onto the roof below and into the gutters

  1. Call us, day or nightWe’re open 24/7. Tell us what happened and where water is getting in.
  2. We get a crew outThe first job is to stop the leak and make the damaged area safe.
  3. Tarp the roofWe clear loose debris, then install and secure the tarp over the damage.
  4. Plan the permanent repairOnce the house is protected, we inspect the damage properly and give you a clear written price for the repair.

How long can a roof tarp stay on?

A tarp is a stopgap, not a repair. Sun breaks down the material and wind works at the fastenings, so it’s meant to protect the house for a short time while the permanent fix is arranged. The sooner the roof is repaired, the less chance of water finding its way in around the edges. While it’s on, check it from the ground after every storm. If an edge has come loose, the tarp is flapping or a new stain shows up inside, call us so we can re-secure it before more water gets in.

Depending on the damage, the next step is a roof repair or, for a badly damaged or older roof, a replacement. We’ll tell you which after we’ve inspected it. If the water came in through a leak rather than storm damage, see roof leak repair.

Storm season on Long Island

Nor’easters, summer thunderstorms and the tail end of hurricane season all bring high winds and heavy rain to Nassau and Suffolk County. Wind tends to lift shingles at the edges and ridges first, and trees that overhang the house can drop limbs straight through the deck. When a storm has damaged your roof, a tarp protects everything under it: ceilings, insulation, wiring, floors and whatever is stored in the attic. Getting the house covered quickly is usually what keeps a roof repair from turning into a much bigger interior repair.

Roof tarping FAQ

Common questions.

Still not sure?

Call 631-965-0881 any time. We'll tell you straight whether it's a repair or a replacement.

01

Do you tarp roofs at night and on weekends?

Yes. We’re open 24/7. Call 631-965-0881 and we’ll get a crew out to stop the leak, tarp the roof if needed, then plan the permanent repair.

02

Is a roof tarp a permanent fix?

No. A tarp is temporary protection that keeps rain and wind out until the roof can be repaired properly. The sooner the permanent repair is done, the better.

03

Should I tarp my roof myself?

We don’t recommend it. Wet, damaged roofs are slippery and can be structurally weak, and a tarp that isn’t secured properly often blows off or funnels water inside. Stay safe on the ground and call us.

04

What happens after the tarp is on?

Once the house is protected, we inspect the damage properly, explain what needs to be done and give you a clear written price for the permanent repair.
